Apprenticeship as Qualified Shipping Merchant

Our Apprentices

As qualified shipping merchant in the field of tramp shipping in our shipping company you will be dealing with vessels, which normally don’t have a fixed itinerary, but primarily sail as orders or contracts demand. In doing so, the vessels of the H & P fleet serve different routes with variable ports of loading/discharging and a wide variety of cargoes, such as bulk cargo, oil and chemical products, container and project cargo. During your apprenticeship you will run through all operating departments within the shipping company, which deal with the employment, disposition, equipment and supply of a vessel. Already as an apprentice you will soon be involved in all processes and will be in contact with our world-wide residing customers, business partners, our onboard personnel as well as with the service companies of the merchant maritime and port industry. Since most of the communication of the shipping company takes place in English, a good command of the English language is essential for the apprenticeship as a qualified shipping merchant.

Besides the practical education you will take part in the weekly classes of the Trade School for Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Transportation (Berufsschule für den Großhandel, Außenhandel und Verkehr)  in the Ellmerstraße, Bremen, which is being promoted by the Harren & Partner Group as supporting member.

What is more, high school graduates have the opportunity, parallel to their apprenticeship, to study at the Bremen Institute for Trade and Transportation (Bremer Institute für Handel und Verkehr), leading to a degree in business administration for transportation and logistics  (“Betriebswirt/Betriebswirtin in Verkehr/Logistik BiVL”). The duration of your education depends on the type of diploma you have as well as on your participation in the proposed course of study and will vary between two and three years.
