Our fleet goes North!

Harren & Partner is happy to announce that another four vessels of the fleet are now compliant with the Polar Code. The Polar Code has been adopted by the IMO with the purpose of safe ship operation in the polar regions as well as the protection of the unique polar environment. As polar waters impose additional demands to ships and crews, the code is to provide a mandatory framework in regards to special equipment, operational requirements as well as seafarer competence.

Already late last year, the two bulkers Pabal and Pabur received their Polar Code Certification. Last week, the first heavy lift vessels were certified in Cuxhaven: MVs Amoenitas, Imke and Lisa, shortly followed by Hanna. The next candidate, MV Klara, is scheduled to be surveyed in Cuxhaven today. Further bulk carriers are currently prepared to comply with the Polar Code requirements.

Complying with the Polar Code, these vessels are equipped according to their certified Polar Waters Operational Manual (PWOM) with satellite compasses, a triple-redundant communication setup, extensive survival kits as well as de-icing tools. According to the Polar Code regulations, these vessels can now operate below 80° North, taking e.g. the Northern Sea Route around Northern Norway to Asia or through the Northwest Passage around Northern Canada.

The successful Polar Code preparation of vessels and crews has been a great team effort!
